Sochi 2014: Keltie Hansen -- An Olympian in our midst!
For every winter for as long as he can remember, Glen Hansen, Financial Advisor, Raymond James Edmonton branch, his wife Sherryl, and their children, Lucas and Keltie, have made countless treks from their home in Edmonton to the mountains of Jasper and far beyond. Glen fondly remembers curling up with three year old Keltie in the Jasper chalet sipping a hot chocolate after only a few runs while Sherryl and Lucas finished their day on the piste.
Fast forward 18 years, Glen and his family were in Sochi, Russia to cheer on Keltie who was representing Canada as one of 222 athletes -- Canada's largest Olympic team ever. The team, which won 25 medals in Sochi, was drawn from athletes from nine provinces and two territories, and has a record 100 female athletes!
"My family fell in love with skiing first, and I was just dragged along for the ride" says Keltie Hansen. "But the more I did it, the more I loved it."
The 2014 Olympics was the first for Keltie, age 21, who competed in the Women's Freestyle Ski HalfPipe. Despite her youth, Keltie is no rookie when it comes to competition. She ranked 3rd at the 2013 Sochi World Cup, 4th in the 2013 X Games, 1st in the 2011 AFP Championship and 3rd in the 2011 FIS World Championships. When not tearing up the slopes in Whistler, Squamish and now around the globe, Keltie attends Quest University where she is pursuing a Science and Art degree with the aspiration of heading into Environmental Law.
"Our family is so very proud of Keltie and absolutely happy for her as we have witnessed her focus, dedication and hard work. She especially demonstrated this drive after undergoing knee surgery in June 2013" says Glen. "Despite her injury, Keltie never strayed from her intention to go to the Olympics and represent Canada."
