The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
Recently, the social media world has been abuzz over the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. You may have seen friends, family and celebrities getting ice cold water dumped over their heads on your Twitter and Facebook feeds.
Hal Spelliscy, Portfolio Manager with the Oram Spelliscy Family Wealth Management of Raymond James Ltd. in Kelowna, has been an advocate of ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) awareness and fundraising for over two decades. Hal's sister Anne has lived with ALS for 25 years - a remarkable feat since most ALS patients succumb to the disease only 3-5 years after diagnosis.
"The Ice Bucket Challenge is, quite simply, a game changer for the ALS struggle," said Hal. "ALS claims the lives of 2 to 3 Canadians each day but, before then, will brutally strain a patient's emotional and financial resources. Raising enough to care for patients, let alone to cure ALS, was a big challenge as ALS never garnered the attention other causes have. The Ice Bucket Challenge has changed that and moved ALS into the mainstream. Not only has an incredible amount of money been raised but over 300,000 new donors are benefiting ALS for the first time. This means that ALS will now be on more people's radar when future donations are considered ... a long overdue and promising new reality!"
To date, the challenge has raised nearly $31.5 million in the US and over $350,000 in Canada. The numbers are growing exponentially each day.
Hal added, "ALS takes everything away from a patient without ever asking ... it tries to say you can't. The Ice Bucket Challenge instead tells people to do what you can, while you can and because you can ... the perfect response to honour and assist those living with ALS."
